Dionysian Dream: The Greek Drama Game is a computer game designed to teach learners aged 14+ about classical Greek Drama and its relationship to modern Western storytelling. The game is an engaging, experiential learning tool for classroom and home use.
Ancient and contemporary stories intertwine in this first-person role-playing adventure. After a failed suicide-attempt, the game's modern-day protagonist is plunged into a Dionysian dreamworld inspired by the historic Euripedes tragedy "The Bacchae." Here, "real" classical dramatists, actors and stagehands mingle with characters from Greek myth in locations such as the Theatre of Dionysus at Athens, the city and wilds of Thebes.
Time is running out for the protagonist: A scene from "The Bacchae" must be performed before the break of dawn. The player's actions decide the identity and outlook of the protagonist, whether a broken family relationship is worth repairing, and ultimately whether the troubled protagonist chooses to live or die.
Game play involves exploration, meaningful dialog, and problem-solving. Working with unique game mechanics, the player will make interesting and challenging choices on scales of opposites including male/female, fate/free will, rational/irrational, sobriety/drunkenness.
By completing the game conscientiously, the player will achieve specific learning outcomes and essential employability skills.
Dionysian Dream is an original project of Phantom Compass, a Toronto-based game production company. The game is aimed at the secondary and post-secondary academic market and niche consumer market. It will be published for Windows- and Mac- based computers, and will be completed by the end of 2009.
